CIBM laboratory is capable of analyzing a wide range of pollutants in marine sediments such as trace metals, typically found in environmental impacts assessment studies. This department ensures high quality procedures applying standardized methods (EPA) for trace metals analysis both in the mineralization process as well as in the analytical one. Moreover the laboratory perform trace metals analysis on various organisms such as Polichets (Hediste diversicolor), Molluscs (Mytilus galloprovincialis), bony fish species, Posidonia oceanica tissues as well as on DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin films). The laboratory apparatus includes a microwave digestion system, various filtering apparatus, centrifuges and shakers for the samples preparation. The core of the analytical process is carried out by an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP), an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (ASS) and DMA-80 Direct Mercury Analyzer.

Furhtermore the CIBM laboratory is specialist in marine sediment granulometry analysis.

To ensure high quality standards in the applied procedures the laboratory is involved in several inter-calibration processes with other Italian and European laboratories.
