The 20th Century evolution of Mediterranean exploited demersal resources under increasing fishing disturbance and environmental change:
EVOMED (EVOlution of MEDiterranean demersal fisheries)

From August 2009, CIBM is responsible of the project EVOMED, in collaboration with ICM-CSIC of Barcelona, HCMR of Athens and UNIMAR of Rome. The project comes from a call for tender of the DG MARE of the European Commission, and it will last through one year.

The EVOMED project is aimed to characterize the fisheries and the resources since, at least, the beginning of the XX century and to follow their evolution over time. Historical information on fishing fleets, fishing practices and resource exploitation will be gathered on a wide geographical range, including the whole Mediterranean basin; information on old trawl surveys will be gathered as well. An extensive campaign of interviews to old fishermen will be performed, in order to collect information and data (logbooks, etc.) on the fishing activities and catches in the past.

The knowledge of the status of resources in the past, their potential and the effects produced by the fishing activity are important elements that can help the implementation of appropriate management measures.
